SO LONG, CRISTIANA

One of my friends has passed away. All the people who knew her – and I’m among those – valued her and now are going to miss her. Cristiana departed this life aged only 52, and, in loving memory of her, her friends decided to sponsor a parentless girl, who stays in one of the Foster Homes in Ukunda, Kenya. From now on, Cristiana will live again in Lucy’s eyes: the little girl will keep her memory alive to her mother Pinella and all of us, through pictures, school progress and smiles.

GIRL’S HISTORY

We don’t have much information about Lucy. Her grandpa, who fostered her with a new family, is old and tired and let us know through the local parish that he cannot look after her anymore. Lucy’s mum has recently died but the circumstances of his death are suspicious, and so is the way the girl arrived at her grandpa’s home. Her dad, as is often the case, is unknown. Lucy stays here with her elder sister, Josephine.

HER LIFE AT THE ORPHANAGE

She’s very shy and always walks round hand in hand with her sister. She uses everything as a toy. When she sits down at the table, she usually doesn’t eat more than she needs, and always ensures that her sister eat up. In her eyes we see the hunger of someone who used to go to sleep without eating.

HEALTH

She enjoys good health and seems to be quite lively.

SCHOOL PROGRESS

She’s been attending nursery school since July 2011. We’ve got her progress report, but it’s still early to give an opinion.
